How to Handle Toxic High Performing Employees

Sep 14, 2022

Toxic High Performing Employees. Most companies have them but no one seems to know what to do with them. These are the employees who think they are protected and can do whatever they want because they are a top performer or have been with the company the longest. These types of employees cause major problems.

Either way, businesses need to address these toxic employees, because they are typically the ones who get the company sued. I know this because  I see it all the time.

From the company’s standpoint, toxic employees who act like this are a huge problem, and need to be dealt with for several reasons.

  1. this person will indirectly result in other employee lawsuits. (Think hostile work environment, discrimination, harassment, retaliation type claims)
  2. Toxic Employee will cause other employees who are very important to the overall function of the team to feel bullied, discouraged and they will eventually leave. This perpetuates the cycle of high turnover, which costs the company money and reduces its bottom line.

The answer is to address it head on and not let the toxic employee rule. Companies should speak with the toxic employee and explain that their employment isn’t just made up of their great performance, but also their conduct towards others. When employees engage in toxic behavior towards others, they are meeting requirements for only one half of their job requirement, as they are completely missing the mark for “conduct”, thereby putting overall performance evaluation at a 50%.
